The Trobriand Kula

WHAT is the Kula?

The Kula is a complex system of ceremonial exchange. This ancient tradition involves the exchange of two types of ornaments, soulava (necklaces) and mwali (arm shells), between island communities. These exchanges are not merely economic transactions but deeply embedded in social and cultural significance. The Kula reinforces social bonds, establishes prestige, and maintains a delicate balance of power between different island groups.

WHO uses this system?

The Kula is practiced by the Trobriand Islanders in Papua New Guinea. Through the Kula, Trobrianders have developed a sophisticated understanding of reciprocity, trust, and the intricate web of relationships that connect their communities.
